Innovation and Creativity

Creativity and innovation are often key to the success of a business, particularly during strategic planning or when designing new products and services. Creative thinking and innovation are particularly useful during Strategic Planning (when strategics  and in Product and Service Management (when designing new products and services.)

“Capital isn’t so important in business. Experience isn’t so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn’t any limit to what you can do with your business and your life.”

Harvey Firestone

The theory & concept of innovation

Theory of innovation:

It is the process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay.

There are many different theories of innovation: breakthrough, incremental, open source to name but a few. There are arguments stating innovations have to be disruptive to qualify; others argue that any change—as long as it is measurable—qualifies as innovation. Some people want innovations to be open and available to all as a means of challenging even more growth and ingenuity; others believe that new discoveries and paths need to be developed privately and secretly.

Trott (1998) a recognized authority on innovation quotes the following definition of innovation:
“Innovation is not a single action but a total process of interrelated sub processes. It is not just the conception of a new idea, nor the invention of a new device, nor the development of a new market. The process is all these things acting in an integrated fashion.”

Innovation is the specific function of entrap entrepreneurship, whether in an existing business, a public service institution, or a new venture started by a lone individual in the family kitchen.

Concept of innovation:

sources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uh1KxcpWz0

Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. Innovation is the engine that drives transformation. it result in an improvement, a gain or a profit.

An invention is useful only to the inventor unless it is offered to the public, however niche that public may be. If the invention improves some product, process or service for the public, then that invention transforms into an innovation.

An innovation can be big or small. Brand-new or just a bit different, it doesn't matter. An innovation can be clearly complex or seemingly simple. Innovations are often thought of in terms of technical achievement, but can also be a design. The type, industry and style of innovation are irrelevant; an innovation's impact determines its qualification.

Nowadays, the nature of innovation has changed from what it was in the past. It is no more individuals toiling in a laboratory, coming up with some great invention. It is multidisciplinary, global and collaboration

Sources of innovation

the four sources of opportunities within a company for innovation:

1. Unexpected occurrences include successes and failures  can be improved for innovation.

2. Incongruities provide opportunities that innovation should solve the incongruities.

3. In order to smooth and with a minimum of accidents, exploited a process need

4. When marketing or industries structure change or grows quickly, innovation is a to match the     situation.

three sources of opportunities outside a company for innovation:

1. The innovation opportunities made possible by changes in the numbers of people and in their age distribution, education, occupations and geographic location.

2. A change in perception does not alter fact. It change their meaning, though and very quickly. It can be exploited for innovation opportunities.

3. Knowledge-base innovations can be temperamental, capricious, and hard to direct. Innovation requires knowledge, ingenuity, and above all else, focus.

Implement innovation in event

The innovation will be applied in three areas of operation, event design and human resources.

unexpected occurrences- operation

For the unexpected occurrences, even the Sweet Family Party is success or failure. During the dessert making session, a children was got heart then influence the rundown. In the future, it should have a risk management plan to implement when accident occur.

incongruities- operation

For incongruities, the dessert buffet time is fewer than participant’ s expectation. The time management should be more accurate and length the time for dessert buffet time.

process needs- operation

As the process needs, the walky-talky will be used in the party that convenience manager communicate with staff. Another example,

Industry and Market Changes- human resources

As the event industry grow and market segments faster grow, the demand of the talent is growing, our company will improve the  human resources management and enhance training for staff.

Demographic Changes- event design

As the aging of population, in the future, it should organize more event for elderly and concept about healthy such as the Olympus Game should add the elderly group to encourage they to do more excise

New knowledge- event design

As the some concert, the concept of three-dimensional technology used to enhance the effect of eye.

The theory & concept of creativity

Theory of Creativity

Boden, (1994) has indicated the creativity:
  • Creativity is a matter of mapping and exploring structured conceptual spaces that have various dimensions, limits, pathways, and levels.
  • Sometimes creative ideas emerge through in-depth exploration of an existing conceptual space.
  • Deeply creative ideas transform and sometimes profoundly alter conceptual spaces.
  • Exploration through complex spaces  requires a great deal of effort.
  • Transformation of the space presuppose a meta representation of the lower-level constraints used.

We can said that creativity is:

Creativity Thinking

Creativity Tools

You can use the creativity tools to improve your creative ability.

2 types of tools for problem solving:
Thinking outside of the box and Six Thinking Hats Theory

2 types of tools for creative thinking:
 Star-bursting and Reverse Brainstorm

1. Thinking outside of the box

Sources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPQN0qrQ0AI

It is think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective. Idea generation or problem solving that is not constrained by self-imposed limits or conventional barriers. Being free or breakthrough thinking, it creates new paradigms and explores non-logical and uncommon ways and solutions.

2. Six Thinking Hats Theory

People can use Six Thinking Hats in meetings or on your own. In meetings it has the benefit of blocking the confrontations that happen when people with different thinking styles discuss the same problem.

White Hat:
With this thinking hat, we focus on the data available. Look at the information we have, and see what we can learn from it

Red Hat:
'Wearing' the red hat, we look at problems using intuition, gut reaction, and emotion. Also try to think how other people will react emotionally

Black Hat:
Using black hat thinking, look at all the bad points of the decision. Look at it cautiously and defensively, it highlights the weak points in a plan that allows we to eliminate them, alter them, or prepare contingency plans to counter them.

Yellow Hat:
The yellow hat helps you to think positively. It is the optimistic viewpoint that helps we to see all the benefits of the decision and the value in it

Green Hat:
The Green Hat stands for creativity. This is where you can develop creative solutions to a problem. It is a freewheeling way of thinking, in which there is little criticism of ideas

Blue Hat:
The Blue Hat stands for process control. This is the hat worn by people chairing meetings. When running into difficulties because ideas are running dry, they may direct activity into Green Hat thinking.

3. Star-bursting

Sources: http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCT_91.htm

Star-bursting is a form of brainstorming that focuses on generating questions rather than answers. It can be used iteratively, with further layers of questioning about the answers to the initial set of questions. We can used star-bursting to develop the new idea from green hat of six thinking hats.

To use the star-bursting technique, you start out by drawing a six-sided star, then write the topic of the idea or problem in the middle and the words "
who," "what," "where," "when," "why" and "how" on each point. Then address each word in the star-bursting.

4. Reverse Brainstorm

Reverse brainstorming solves the problems of direct questioning and the singular approach by exploring multiple factors in reverse.

With reversal brainstorming, you take a potential problem, such as "How can we satisfy our customers?" and change it to "How can we dissatisfy our customers?" Asking the reverse questions is another way to look at a difficult problem and identify solutions by thinking up the opposite effects of what you really want.

There are five steps in the Reverse Brainstorming Process:

1. Identify the problem plainly and write it down.
2. Reverse the issue. For example, instead of asking “How can I help?” ask, “How can I  make it worse?”
3. Brainstorm to figure out all possible reverse solutions. Reject nothing. Criticize nothing.
4. Flip the reverse solutions to create real fixes for the actual issue.
5. Evaluate these solutions and decide if a real solution can be formed.

Implement creativity in event

Implement creativity in event

For the implementation, the creativity tools will be applied in the operation, event design and human resources of event which from Sweet Family Party and other relevant example and recommendations for these. Three creativity tools include: Thinking outside of box, Six Hats Theory and Star-bursting

Thinking outside of the box- event design

The participants said that theme of the party is monotonous that should more creative.

As the Sweet Family Party, is a theme of dessert of party and there are some colorful decorations for the layout.

In the thinking outside of the box, the theme should not just about dessert, it should add other theme such as magical element in the party including invite magician to have show for children. To make the theme more creative and the party will be better atmosphere

As other example, thinking outside of the box can be used in cultural and history exhibition which theme and concept is more boring then it should add new technology such as touch screen and operation exhibits to show the information and increase the interaction between people and exhibits. It can enhance the concept to be more creative.
